Reading always comes before writing, and thanks to my mom, books were a part of my life from an early age. In addition to the full bookcases at home, I remember trips to the local public library where I read all of the Boys' section and most of the books in the Girls' area. Did I mention that I grew up in a small midwestern town? One day I walked over to the Adult area and selected my first Mary Stewart novel. I was afraid the librarian would refuse to check out an adult book to a kid, but she did. I devoured Mary Stewart and Victoria Holt and any book that could transport me back in time to courts and courtiers, coaches and windswept moors, and tortured heros and brave heroines.
So when the time arrived to test my own hand at writing, I wanted to recreate that magic of living in the past. Every place you stand, someone stood before. Imagine who and why and what happened. Those are the journeys in my novels, and I hope you will enjoy them with me.
I spent my time in the university, graduating with a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Michigan, taking every writing class possible. Later I added a master's degree in Library Science and became a librarian dedicated to providing information access for everyone.
I love history and the marvelous Great Lakes that surround Michigan. Many of the small details in The Lightkeeper's Wife were borrowed from true tales of heroism and heartbreak from the Great Lakes' age of sail.
I live in northern Michigan with my husband, a Great Lakes ship pilot, and two spoiled cats. When I'm not writing, I enjoy quilting, hiking, and exploring new sights and places.
